The cease-fire agreements which Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold obtained from Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel last April are still valid and anyone in the Middle East implying that the agreements have been nullified is “incorrect, as well as irresponsible,” the UN chief declared here today.
Mr. Hammarskjold’s statement was motivated by fears that the cease-fire had broken down completely as a result of several serious clashes this week, which reportedly brought about the death of 19 Jordanians, nine Israelis and five Egyptians.
Despite the “mounting series of incidents, followed by counter-moves, the most serious of which took place on Sept. 10 and 12,” the cease-fire agreements are formal obligations undertaken by the governments concerned and continue in effect, unless formally repealed by one of the governments, Mr. Hammarskjold said.
