Harkavy, Noted Lexicographer, Dead Here at 76

Alexander Harkavy, author and lexicographer known for his work in education of immigrants in the English language, was found dead of a stroke at 7 o’clock this morning by attendants at the Broadway Central Hotel, where he resided. Harkavy, who was 76, had been suffering for some time from partial paralysis. Funeral arrangements had not yet been completed late this afternoon.

Born in Poland, Harkavy came to the United States in his youth. He was editor of Yiddish newspapers in Baltimore and New York. Beginning with his “The English Teacher” in 1891 he was the author of several books and dictionaries which aided thousands of immigrants to master the English language. He also wrote philological treatises and contributed to publications in the United States and Europe.
