King Hassan II of Morocco has issued an urgent call for an Arab summit meeting to consider the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, it was disclosed here last night. The Moroccan ruler cited the “repeated attacks on the Lebanese brother country by our enemy, Israel” as one of the reasons for convening a summit meeting, according to the text of his letter to Mahmud Riad, secretary general of the Arab League. No date was indicated for such a meeting.
The letter, released by the government, charged that Israel’s actions were intended to “sow differences” between the Palestinian movement and the Lebanese authorities and constituted an attack on “Arab solidarity.” Hassan also charged that “Israel’s expansionism aims at amputating parts of Lebanese territory” and therefore the Arab world “must maintain solidarity with the Lebanese people.” He urged Riad to contact all Arab heads of state to ensure the participation of Arab premiers and foreign minister.
The Moroccan Association to Help the Palestinian Struggle announced today that it had provided 20 Jeeps and 25 tons of food to guerrillas of the “Palestine resistance.” The Moroccan organization has branches here and in Casablanca, Fez, Safi and Sale. Its statement exhorted “all responsible Arabs” to identify themselves with El Fatah chief Yassir Arafat in order to “help Lebanon in a more effective way.”
