Hitler’s war on religious liberty is criticized in an editorial prominently featured today in the Hearst newspapers throughout the country. The editorial says in part:
“On the very day that Hans Kerrl issued his decree against the Protestant Confessional Synods a cable to the Hearst papers from Berlin announced that instructions were published in the official German Police Gazette empowering policemen to arrest without a warrant Jews seen with ‘Aryan’ women in restaurants and other public places.
“Just when mankind thought it has forever left behind it the state ordained ghettos, the fire, the faggot and the torture rack, a Government comes into power in the country that gave the world Beethoven. Heine, Goethe, Schiller, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Schubert and impregnates the world again with a poison that is believed it had got out of its system forever.
“This has produced in Germany in the short space of three years a condition of mental and physical slavery such as the world has not known since the time of sterile, brutal Sparta, where the state took over the physical and spiritual being of its natives from the cradle to the grave.
“That men like Julius Streicher and Hans Kerrl should be deliberately let loose on sixty million people in the heart of Europe by a Government that is recognized diplomatically throughout the world, is tantamount to planting an infernal machine at the very bases of modern civilization.”
