Hebrew Press Welcomes High Commissioner, Arab Organs State Demands

Editorial comment in the Hebrew and the Arabic press of Palestine on the occasion of Sir John Chancellor’s arrival in Jerusalem to take up his post as High Commissioner, brings out the views of the leaders of the two sections of the Palestine population.

The Hebrew newspapers welcome the new High Commissioner in editorials this morning. Despite the disappointments of the preceding years, the editorials declare, Palestine Jewry looks forward to a new era of prosperity and progress under the brilliant administrator and colonizer. They point to the fact that the new High Commissioner in statements made before his departure for Jerusalem expressed his sympathy with the aims of the Zionist movement and gave the promise to carry on his administration in accordance with the Palestine Mandate.

The new High Commissioner must make it his task to correct the numerous evils that exist in the Palestine situation and to start the fulfillment of the obligations resting upon the Mandatory Power of Palestine, the Hebrew papers declare.

The Arabic papers concentrate mainly on the statement of the new High Commissioner that he will carry on his administration in accordance with the terms of the Palestine Mandate. It will not be sufficient if Sir John will repair the roads, establish hospitals and construct the harbor. The Arabs in Palestine, like those in Syria, Iraq and Egypt, demand a national government, the editorials say.
