The Hebrew schools throughout Palestine reopened this morning as 1,600 teachers returned to work after a three-week strike. It was not announced whether any settlement had been reached with the Jewish National Council concerning the teachers’ demand for higher wages to meet increased living costs, which precipitated the dispute.
Sir Harold MacMichael, Palestine High Commissioner, broadcasting yesterday on the occasion of the celebration of Empire Day, reported on his recent visit to London, stating that “the fine contributions made to the war effort by our industry, agriculture and home guards are not unappreciated there.” He warned, however, that Palestine must not fall into complacency since “the race has still to be run.” The High Commissioner called for increased production and “tightening of belts” to save materials and shipping space.
In Tel Aviv yesterday “London Square” was dedicated at the sea front during the Empire Day Celebration.
