Prof. Selig Brodetsky, president of the Hebrew University, today protested the ban by Jordan last week of Israel convoys bound for Mt. Scopus. “The recent Jordanian decision, not to allow the usual convoy to proceed to the University at Mt. Scopus is beyond understanding,” he said. Dr. Brodetsky was speaking at ceremonies marking the opening of the University’s new academic year.
The University president urged the government to use its influence, in the United Nations and elsewhere, to obtain the return of Mt. Scopus to the Jewish part of Jerusalem. “We must never allow any doubt to exist in our minds that we in any way have departed from our constant demand for the return of Scopus,” he stated.
Prof. Brodetsky revealed that the University staff now consists of 42 full professors, 30 associate professors, 75 assistants, 26 “external” teachers, 11 research follows, 45 lecturers, 38 instructorn, nine teachers holding B.A. degrees, and 11 language teachers. The number of students enrolled in the current academic year is 1,656, of whom 194 are enrolled in the medical school. Dr. Brodetsky, who said he expected the enrollment to increase by 2,000, reported each student costs the University about $1,400 annually. He appealed to the government to increase its present subsidies.
