The Hebrew University yesterday announced publication of the first revision of the Hebrew text of the Bible by Jewish scholar in Jerusalem. The project was conceived by the late Judah L. Magnes, then president of the University, and was carried out by Prof. Umberto Cassuto who died in 1951.
Prof. Cassuto introduced some 20,000 minor corrections or variations of vowel pointing and accenting of Hebrew, but restricted his changes to marginal notes, not making any changes in the text. The new edition of the Bible was made by transferring Prof. Cassuto’s corrections to photo static copies of the generally accepted “Ginsburg” text and then reproducing the corrected pages on photographic plates.
Another proposal of Dr. Magnes, that a specially designed type be used for the Bible, was put off for the time being because of financial difficulties.
