Israel’s Supreme Court issued a temporary injunction today ordering suspension of work on a town for Orthodox settlers, Emmanuel, on northern Samaria in the West Bank.
The court acted on a request from a local Arab, who claims ownership of the site and who told the high court that its previous orders halting construction had not been obeyed. A representative of the State of Israel expressed doubt whether the military commander for the area could implement the court orders.
That statement triggered an angry reaction from Justice Meir Shamgar, president of the court, who declared it was unheard of that the area’s military commander, who embodies both the legislative and executive powers in the area, would disobey a High Court of Justice order. He ordered the State Attorney to make certain the order issued today be handed to all parties involved.
