A monument to the Jewish victims of the holocaust in the cemetery of the Or Shalom Synagogue here was vandalized this week-Smeared across the surface of the monument were the slogan, “Judenraus” and “Lies, lies.” Another slogan, which seemed incongruous, was, “Never again.” This slogan is identified with the Jewish Defense League.
Harold Vaisler, chairman of the local Jewish community relations committee, Rabbi-Emeritus David Kirshenbaum and Rabbi Jacob Rone expressed dismay and shock at this outrage. The Jewish Community Council scheduled a meeting to determine whether to offer a reward for the apprehension of the vandal or vandals. The London Free Press, the leading local daily, issued an editorial deploring the act as an expression of a sick mind. London is in west-central Ontario with a Jewish population of about 1200.
