Hadassah’s 500 chapters throughout the country held meetings over the weekend to celebrate the 80th birthday of Miss Henrietta Szold, founder of the organization and social worker.
Hadassah’s 94,000 members have joined in signing a birthday book which also bears the signatures of President Roosevelt, Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter and other notables. Hadassah is sending Miss Szold a $25,000 birthday gift to assist her work.
In two broadcasts yesterday over National Broadcasting Company networks, Miss Katherine Lenroot, head of the United States Children’s Bureau, and Rabbi David de Sola Pool paid tribute to the social worker, who now directs Youth Aliyah work in Palestine. Governor Herbert H. Lehman sent a message describing Miss Szold as “one of the outstanding women of our time.”
