The House of Representatives today unanimously approved a resolution proclaiming April 29 as a day of observance to mark the 30th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. Rep. Bertram L. Podell (D.N.Y.) introduced the resolution on Feb. 6 with the co-sponsorship of 20 other Congressmen.
The resolution-said that the Warsaw Ghetto Jews “by their heroic struggle reaffirmed the ineradicable determination of mankind to fight for freedom from oppression and symbolized the indestructible spirit of liberty.” It goes to the Senate for concurrence.
Prospects for a change of French policy toward the Middle East dimmed with the appointment of Michel Jobert as Foreign Minister succeeding Maurice Schumann who lost his parliamentary seat in the French elections last month. Jobert, 53, is a civil servant who has been closely associated with President Georges Pompidou since 1963. He served most recently as secretary general at the Elysee Palace, a combination of chief of staff and advisor on foreign and national security affairs to the President. Observers said his appointment meant that Pompidou was reasserting his personal control over France’s foreign policy.
