A housing project “Givat Mordecai” named for Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Abbell of Chicago, and which will accommodate 2,500 Israelis, was inaugurated in a new Jerusalem suburb in the presence of a large group of government dignitaries and civic leaders. The speakers lauded Mr. Abbell’s manifold contributions to Zionism and to Judaism.
The housing project was made possible by Mr. Abbell, noted communal leader of Chicago, who made available $120,000 to the Jewish National Fund of America for the acquisition of the site. Under the terms of the agreement, housing facilities are to be accorded to Sabbath observers, with members of the Hapoel Hamizrachi having priority. After the signing of the inauguration scroll, Rabbi A. Kahana of the Ministry stone for a synagogue to be named Ohel Moshe Eliahu, in memory of Mr. Abbell’s father. In his reply, Mr. Abbell, pointed to two influences which led him to this occasion–his Hebrew teacher and his parents, in whose home there was always a picture of Dr. Herzl and a blue-white box of the Jewish National Fund.
