The Hungarian Jewish weekly “Uj Elet,” was last week awarded the diploma of honor of the Hungarian Peace Council for its work in “strengthening world peace and tightening the cooperation between the local Jewish community and the (Hungarian) state.” The diploma was awarded to the paper’s editor, Gyorgy Kecskmeti, and the deputy chairman of the community, Imre Kulcsar who represented the paper.
The weekly has a circulation of 7000. Founded in 1945 it follows a non-political line stressing that “it is neither for Israel nor against it.” It reports at length on cultural events in Israel and elsewhere in the Western world. Hundreds of copies are sent to other East European states and some are even mailed to subscribers in the United States.
