A Joint Senate Commission has deferred to June further consideration of the Government’s anti-Jewish bill, already passed by the Chamber of Deputies. The delay is occasioned by the Eucharistic Congress opening Monday.
The commission heard severe criticism of the sections of the law providing that only Jews baptized before 1919 are to be considered as Christians in restricting Jews to 20 percent in Hungary’s economic life. Cardinal Seredi, supported by several bishops, condemned this clause as a violation of divine laws, declaring that the sacrament of baptism could no be held to depend on any date. Cardinal Seredi accepted the bill so far as it did not violate this principle.
