King Hussein of Jordan denied today that any contacts between Israel and Jordan had taken place-or were taking place. The King made his statement on emerging from a 70-minute meeting with President Charles de Gaulle at the Elysee Palace. The Jordanian ruler and the French leader were believed to have discussed the Middle East situation and King Hussein was said to have explained Jordan’s position and its diplomatic moves toward a peace settlement. Speaking to newsmen afterwards, King Hussein said that “Jordan has shown her willingness to apply the Security Council resolution of last November and now expects the other side (Israel) to do the same.” He said that his recent stay in London had been “purely for medical reasons” and that no contact between himself and any Israeli officials had taken place while he was there or at any other time. “We have done our best to further Ambassador Gunnar Jarring’s mission to find a just and lasting peace and now we expect Israel to do the same,” he said.
