Spokesmen for immigrant groups in Israel protested vehemently today over new regulations put into effect over the week-end reducing the privileges hitherto granted to new immigrants. The rules were promulgated after Israeli authorities discovered large-scale frauds perpetrated by immigrants who found loopholes in the old regulations. But the immigrants associations complained that the vast majority of honest olim were being penalized for the crimes of a few.
The new rules allow only one duty-free car per family to be brought into the country despite claims that a second car is necessary. In addition immigrants will no longer be allowed to receive duty-free parcels from home during their first three years in the country. This was viewed as imposing a hardship on young immigrants.
