Immigration of Jews from Rumania and Hungary to Israel has been interrupted, a Jewish Agency spokesman announced here today. He added that the Jewish Agency had addressed inquiries on the subject to both the Rumanian and Hungarian Governments.
The spokesman reported that immigration from other Balkan countries is proceeding normally. Between 100 and 150 immigrants are arriving each month from Bulgaria, he said. A total of 360 Hungarian Jews were prevented from leaving for the Jewish State at the last moment, the spokesman revealed.
He disclosed that a group of Indian Jews, who forced the Agency to return them to India recently after they had spent a year in Israel, are now making desperate attempts to come back to Israel. Some are collecting funds in Indian synagogues to pay their expenses, while two of their representatives have gone to the Agency office in India to express their regret over their action and to ask the Agency to bring them to Israel a second time. Otherwise, they threatened, they would stage a hunger strike in the Agency office in India. However, the Agency has refused to pay the cost of their transportation a third time.
