Three hundred refugee Jews from Afghanistan threatened with immediate expulsion from India have been granted an extension of stay until the and of March, according to a cable from Bombay received by the World Jewish Congress.
The cable said that the deportation order has been stayed and that negotiations are continuing to prevent the forced departure of the 300 Jews until arrangements can be made for their resettlement. Two weeks ago, Dr. Maurice L. Perlzweig, chief of the political department of the Congress, intervened with Sir Girja Shanker Bajpai, K.C.S.I., K.B.E., charge d’affaires of the Indian Embassay at Washington, on behalf of the Afghanistan Jews.
