The Government of Indonesia was branded today as “short-sighted and ungenerous” for her refusal to admit two Israelis into Indonesia to attend the annual business meeting of World University Service, an international student welfare organization. The charge was made by Dr. Arthur J. Lelyveld, vice-chairman of the American organization, in a statement explaining the reasons for cancellation of the Indonesian site as a meeting place.
“We were surprised and dismayed by the decision of the Government of Indonesia preventing the Israeli delegates from attending,” Dr. Lelyveld stated. “We find Indonesia’s action shortsighted and ungenerous, and we have decided to search elsewhere for a meeting place, World University Service is a non-political organization that provides technical and educational assistance to needy universities and students throughout the world. Our program operates without discrimination as to race, religion, or nationality. We shall continue to adhere to these principles in the conduct of our program and in the meetings at which these programs are planned.”
