Bureau of Jewish Social Research Will Conduct Nation-Wide Study
The Bureau of Jewish Social Research has been engaged by the Committee on National Appeals Information Service for Jewish Federations to make a complete functional and financial study of all organizations making appeals nationally in the United States, William J. Shroder of Cincinnati, chairman of the committee, announced.
The committee, which was organized last May, met last week in Chicago. Mr. Shroder announced that the Bureau of Jewish Social Research had already begun work under the direction of Samuel A. Goldsmith, and that a preliminary report had been prepared.
The report showed that there are thirty-eight American Jewish organizations making appeals throughout the country at least once a year.
The Bureau also has made a study of twenty-one Palestinian organizations, not including those connected with the Zionist Organization. From figures available it appears that approximately $500,000 is being sent to Palestine annually by these organizations, that they employ 159 collectors and that they have collection and office expenses ranging from fifteen to forty-five percent.
The following officers of the National Appeals Information Service were elected at the Chicago meeting: Chairman, William J. Shroder; vice-chairman, Louis N. Cahn, of Chicago, for more than twenty years a member of the various boards of Jewish philanthdopic activities in Chicago and at present executive director of the Jewish Charities of that city; secretary-treasurer, George W. Rabinoff, of Indianapolis, executive director of the Jewish Federation of that city.
It was announced that the Committee expects $12,000 from various Federations to carry on the work. A report will be made in May 1928 at the next National Conference of Jewish Social Service.
