The image of Judaism in Christian education and Christianity in Jewish education was the main subject of discussions at the seventh annual meeting of the International Liaison Committee between the Catholic Church and Judaism in Madrid, Spain earlier this month, a committee spokesman reported here.
The committee held its first session at the Transito Synagogue in Toledo to commemorate the Jewish presence in Spain before the expulsion in 1492 and then moved for the working conference to the Centro Comunal of the Comunidad Israelita in Madrid. Papers on education were read by clergymen from Europe and the United States.
The second part of the meeting was devoted to information on Israel’s new law against proselytism, the human rights situation in several parts of the world, the resurgence of Nazism and anti-Semitism in Germany and other countries, the Catholic-Moslem dialogue and the beginning of a dialogue between Moslems and Jews.
The delegates were guests at a reception given by the Centro de Estudios Judeo-Cristianos of Madrid and a dinner given by the Jewish community of Madrid and participated in a Shabat service. Rabbi Ronald Sobel, rabbi of New York’s Temple Emanu-El, and Msgr. Charles Moeller, vice-president of the Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with Judaism, who were co-chairmen of the meeting, stressed the warmth and friendship which underlined the three-day meeting and the common determination to pursue the objectives and goals of the committee.
