The Army spokesman confirmed today that an Israeli platoon on maneuvers in the south had crossed the Jordanian border by mistake. The spokesman said that the Jordanians opened fire on the platoon which realized its mistake and withdrew into Israel without returning the Jordanian fire, without suffering any casualties.
The Israeli representative on the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission informed the Jordanians last night of the platoon’s error. Nevertheless, the Jordanian radio announced this morning that Israeli forces tried to blast a Jordanian police station but retreated without doing so after an exchange of fire.
The Israel Armored Corps plans to switch for the first time to locally manufactured heavy trucks to transport its tanks, it was disclosed here yesterday in Bamachane, the Army weekly. The changeover, the weekly said, is the first of a series to locally manufactured vehicles with plans for an all Israel-made Army transport fleet within the next few years. The heavy trucks, manufactured by the Leyland plant in Ashdod, are 23 feet long and 8 feet wide.
