Israel Air Force jets roared over Cairo today to bomb military targets at El Maadi, a suburb six miles south of the Egyptian capital. The Israeli fighter-bombers also struck at Dahshur, 18 miles south of Cairo. A military spokesman said all aircraft returned safely to their bases. Cairo claimed that two Israeli planes were shot down by anti-aircraft fire. According to the Egyptians, the Israeli bombs killed three persons, injured 12 others and damaged three buildings.
The latest Israeli air strike was the closest to Cairo since the June, 1967 Six-Day War. But it met no challenge from the Egyptian Air Force. The raid on El Maadi lasted 15 minutes and drew anti-aircraft and machine gun fire from the ground which was ineffective, the Israeli spokesman said. According to eye witness accounts from Cairo, shoppers and businessmen in the downtown section were momentarily stunned by the sudden blast of anti-aircraft fire but then continued about their business.
