Israel announced it would lift its blockade on Lebanon’s air space and seaports Thursday. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office said Wednesday that Israel had received assurances from the U.S. secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, and the U.N. secretary-general, Kofi Annan, that foreign peacekeeper forces were prepared to take over observation posts designed to monitor the possible smuggling of arms to Hezbollah.
