The Cabinet met here without taking any action on the question of extending the tenure of the Chief Rabbinate Council which expired on October 21. The entire issue was shelved until next week under pressure of routine matters.
During the session, the ministers of the National Religious Party failed to obtain majority support for a limited extension for the Chief Rabbinate Council to bridge the gap until elections are held for the posts of Chief Rabbi. The elections were stalled two weeks ago when the fourth resignation among the eight members of the nominating commission resulted in lack of a quorum in that body. The commission appoints the members of the electoral college who elect the Ashkenazi and Sephardi Chief Rabbis.
