Israel confirmed that it planned to assassinate Saddam Hussein in 1992. Commandos were to have infiltrated Iraq and killed Saddam using missiles as the Iraqi leader attended his father-in-law’s funeral. But the plan went awry on Nov. 5, 1992, during a botched test run that claimed the lives of five soldiers and harmed the reputation of Israel’s army chief of staff at the time, Ehud Barak.
