More than 30,000,000 Israeli pounds ($10,000,000) will be spent by Israel on port developments and expansions during the fiscal year 1962-63, according to a decision made here today by a Ministerial Committee dealing with economic planning.
Of the total, 19, 000, 000 pounds will be spent at the new port of Ashdod; 8, 000, 000 pounds at Haifa and the Kishon River; and the port of Eilat has been allocated three million pounds. The remainder will be spent at the Tel Aviv-Jaffa port. The committee also approved a three-year expansion program for Eilat requiring additional expenditures of 18,000,000 pounds ($6,000,000).
A new freighter, the 3, 500-ton Varde, was put into service in Eilat today for Israel’s Red Sea routes to Far Eastern and Southeast Asian ports. Built in Sweden, the vessel, which was acquired by the All Seas Shipping Company, has a speed of 14-and-one-half knots and 40, 000 cubic feet of refrigerated space.
