The steering committee of the Histadrut, Israel’s general federation of labor, today recommended the expulsion of Communists from the Histadrut as enemies of the Jewish State. The steering committee’s action, supported by both the Mapai and General Zionist representatives on the committee, must be approved by the full Histadrut council for the decision to become effective.
The steering committee resolution declared that the Israel Communist Party had proved itself, through its publications and declarations, “an open enemy of the Jewish nation, the Jewish State and the labor movement.” It added that there was no way of dealing with the Communists except by reviving a Histadrut decision of 1924 which expelled the Communist Party for “undermining activities toward the Jewish redemption.”
The resolution asked the council to take the following steps: dissolve all Communist groups in Histadrut organizations; bring all Communists and their supporters to trial before a Histadrut court on charges of subversive activities; and, halt all work of the Communists in Histadrut institutions pending the trial. Mordecai Namir, general secretary of the Histadrut, was asked in the resolution to set an early date for a meeting of the Histadrut council to act on the resolution.
