Israeli forces killed 16 Arab marauders in two widely separated clashes yesterday, smashing what was apparently an attempt by saboteurs and terrorists to penetrate deep into Israel territory. One Israeli soldier was killed and another was injured in one of the encounters, a military spokesman reported today. He said the clash was the fiercest in weeks. Meanwhile, Gen. Moshe Dayan, Israel’s Defense Minister, and Gen. Chaim Bar-Lev, Chief of Staff of the armed forces, toured settlements in the Beisan and Jordan Valleys and assured the population that Jordan would not be safe if attacks on Jewish settlements continue to be waged from her territory.
An Israeli soldier was injured slightly Saturday morning and seven others suffered slight injuries Friday night, all in mining incidents. The latter occurred south of the Dead Sea when a command car struck an anti-vehicle mine. On Saturday morning, a halftrack struck a mine south of Tirat Zvi in the Beisan Valley. A 13-year-old Arab boy was killed in East Jerusalem when an explosive device he picked up detonated in his hand.
