The United States is not exerting pressure on the Israel Government in the Israel-Jordan border situation, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry declared today, denying a U.S. press report that the U.S. had sent Israel a “strong” note on the border “incidents.”
The spokesman said that the U.S. diplomatic mission in Israel, like all other diplomatic missions in the country, was maintaining contact with Israel officials on various matters. He pointed out that “to take one ring out of a chain” creates an “unreal” picture.
He specifically denied the assertion that an unused Arab college building in the no-man’s land area of Jerusalem had been evacuated by Israel under American pressure. The spokesman pointed out that the Israel police had evacuated the “invaders”–immigrants seeking a roof over their heads–in accordance with the terms of the Israel-Jordan armistice pact.
