Israel renewed its request for special U.S. aid in funding the Gaza Strip withdrawal. Shimon Peres, who is visiting Washington this week as emissary for Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, raised the issue of the special grant in talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Israel needs the money to relocate settlers evacuated from Gaza last year, especially in the underdeveloped regions of the Negev and Galilee.
