Israel will end its seven-month boycott of the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission when it returns to that body October 15, the day on which the new chairman of the MAC, American Lt. Col. Charles F. Brewster, takes over his duties.
Israel this week-end approved the appointment of Col. Brewster as a successor to Commander Elmo R. Hutchinson. It was in bitter protest over Commander Hutchinson’s refusal to acknowledge Jordan’s responsibility for the Scorpion Pass massacre in which 11 Israelis were murdered in an Arab ambush in the Negev, that Israel walked out of the MAC and refused to cooperate with it.
Jordan has proposed, in the wake of the announcement that Israel is returning to the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission, that all complaints filed by both sides with the MAC be cancelled, Gen. E.L.M. Burns, United Nations truce supervisor, said today. The Jordanians made one reservation, in the case of 78 Arab infiltrees who had been rounded up by the Israeli authorities and expelled from Israel.
Jordanian authorities have returned 420 lambs stolen by Arab marauders a fortnight ago from the Ein Hashofet pasture near Medigo. According to Israel’s complaint, a total of 480 lambs had been taken in the raid, and the Jewish shepherd had been wounded. Israel demanded the return of the rest of the flock.
