Seventy-five Israel seamen received their certificates as deck and engine room officers in Israel’s merchant marine at graduation exercises here yesterday. The certificates were granted after the men had passed examinations given by a government-appointed board.
Speaking at the ceremony, Zeev Hayam, secretary of the board of examiners, said that 700 new officers would be needed in Israel’s rapidly expanding merchant fleet in the next four years. The number of seamen, he added, has risen from 250 two years ago to 1,000 at present.
