Israel remained officially silent today on yesterday’s rocket attack on PLO headquarters in Beirut amid speculation that Israeli forces or their agents were responsible. While government officials declined to discuss the incident, the newspaper Maariv said in an editorial today that the efficient way in which the target was pin-pointed and the attack launched tended to corroborate the PLO contention that Israeli agents were involved.
Rockets fired from automobiles parked on crowded streets in downtown Beirut struck three offices of the PLO causing heavy damage but only minor injuries. According to a report from Beirut, government security forces identified four men who had rented the cars used in the attack and who held passports from West Germany, Mexico, Britain and Ireland.
