Moslems and Christians living in Israel–comprising about 10 percent of the country’s population–will be drafted into the armed services hereafter under the compulsory service law. That was indicated today when the Defense Ministry issued orders that recruiting be begun in all Israeli communities which until now had not been required to furnish their military service quotas.
Under the new instructions, registrations for military service and medical examinations are to be carried through for all males born between 1937 and 1943. Until now, only the Druze community, among the minority groups in Israel, has contributed its military quota.
