The Israel Mission to the United Nations today accused UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim of exceeding “the limits of his office” in his remarks at a dinner given by the Arab League here Friday night in which Waldheim was quoted as calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state. The statement by the Israel Mission said:
“The Secretary General has exceeded the limits of his office as the chief administrator of an organization in which states representing a variety of interests are members. He has put himself squarely on the side of one of the parties in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
“The gravity of this recent utterance is augmented by the fact that it comes in the midst of a debate being currently held in the General Assembly on this matter. It is difficult to escape the conclusion that the Secretary General’s statement marks the announcement of his bid for a third term of office.”
