Israel wants the United States to commit to understandings about Israeli claims in the West Bank as part of an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz made the case for such understandings in meetings last week with Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Condoleezza Rice, President Bush’s national security adviser.
