The United Nations Security Council resolution calling upon Egypt to lift the blockade of Israeli traffic at the Suez Canal will strengthen peace and stability as well as free trade in the Near East, an Israel Government spokesman declared here today.
The spokesman added that the resolution will strengthen the Israel-Egyptian armistice agreement despite Arab attempts to disregard it. It was learned today that Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett discussed the Suez Canal situation with Pavel Yershov, the Soviet Minister to Israel, last Friday.
(A report from Alexandria today said that a member of the Egyptian Cabinet who would not permit use of his name said that Egypt has decided on a firm rejection of the Security Council’s order. “Egypt will continue her policy to the end,” he said. “It would not be in the interests of the big powers to create trouble in this part of the world, because they would be the losers first and last.” Foreign Minister Salah ed-Din said Israel first should comply with months-old U.N. resolutions on repatriation of and compensation for Arab refugees and internationalization of Jerusalem. Only then, he said, will Egypt lift the blockade.)
