Although an Algerian, whose government is a member of the Arab League, was presiding over the session, Israel today won the right of participating in the deliberations of the Social Committee of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, against open Arab opposition, when the committee convened here today for its first meeting of the current ECOSOC session.
Israel is not a member of the Social Commission, but had applied for the status of official observer, so that its representative could participate in the discussions on human rights affairs on the body’s agenda. The representatives of Egypt and Iraq opposed recognition of Israel as an observer, and were supported by the Soviet Union delegation.
