Israeli authorities scrambled to contain a suspected outbreak of bird flu.
Eighteen chickens and ducks kept at a petting zoo in the northern Israeli town of Binyamina were discovered dead Thursday, and tests suggested they may have been killed by the H5N1 avian flu strain.
The agriculture minister quarantined the area and the kindergarten’s children were ordered home for observation.
A 2006 outbreak of bird flu, which can kill humans, prompted Israel to cull more than a million chickens and turkeys.
