Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resigned from the Israeli government in protest over the upcoming withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu said Sunday that he was leaving the government because the withdrawal “endangers Israel’s security, divides its people and sets the standards of withdrawal to the ’67 borders,” the Jerusalem Post reported. Later Sunday, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon named Ehud Olmert to be acting finance minister. Despite Netanyahu’s opposition, the Cabinet passed the first phase of the withdrawal plan Sunday by a vote of 17-5.
