Israeli military analysts are warning Russia not to carve out a security zone in Chechnya as part of Moscow’s ongoing battle against Islamic guerrillas in the region. “This is a prescription for endless war that you cannot win,” said retired Gen. Avraham Rotem. He cited Israel’s own experience in the southern Lebanon security zone, which it carved out in 1985 and from which it is still trying to extricate itself. “Very soon it will be exactly like our place, a low intensity war with a regular army with tanks and planes and artillery that are useless against guerrillas fighting a dirty war.”
