Israeli police and soldiers raided 22 “chop shops” in Israel and the West Bank in an attempt to crack down on the trade in stolen car parts. In 1997, a record 46,000 cars were stolen in Israel. Many of these cars were reportedly smuggled to the West Bank for sale or stripping.
