Dr. Bernard Joseph, Israeli military governor for Jerusalem, left today for the United States as a special emissary of Premier Ben Gurion to ask Henry Morgenthau Jr., general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, to retain his post in 1949. Elections for a U.J.A. general chairman will take place at the Appeal’s national conference which will open in Atlantic City on Jan. 12.
A delegation of top Israeli leaders, including Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog and Levy Skolnick-Eshkol, a member of the Jewish Agency executive, will leave this weekend by plane for the United States to participate in the U.J.A. conference. The delegation will outline to the conference the major current problems affecting Israel, with particular emphasis on the question of absorbing, housing, retraining and otherwise integrating the nearly 200,000 immigrants expected to arrive in the Jewish state during 1949.
