Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak promised Israel’s chief rabbis in a letter that he would not make any decision on giving up sovereignty over the Temple Mount without consulting them first. The chief rabbis expressed disappointment, saying that in conversations Barak had more clearly opposed the transfer of sovereignty over the site.
