An Israeli soldier was killed by sniper fire today from the Egyptian side of the Suez Canal near Port Tewfik.
Later in the day, fierce artillery action broke out when Egyptians started shelling Israeli positions in the Port Tewfik area. United Nations observers proposed a cease-fire after about an hour, and the Israelis stopped firing. However, when the Egyptians continued the shelling the Israelis resumed their return fire.
Two Israeli soldiers were injured Sunday when their command car hit a mine in northern Sinai while travelling on an unpaved track. A series of incidents took place along the Jordan River during the weekend without any Israeli casualties despite a fierce exchange of small arms and machine gun fire. Jordanian positions opened fire several times on Israeli forces.
