Israel continued to demonstrate today that it has no intention of giving up Sharm el-Sheikh, the strongpoint on the southern tip of Sinai that commands the Straits of Tiran. For the first time since its seizure by Israeli forces in June, 1967, Sharm el-Sheikh has been listed as a civilian address. An official of the Interior Ministry visited there, it was disclosed today to advise Israeli civilian residents that they could have Sharm el-Sheikh listed as their permanent address on their identity cards. Israeli law requires citizens to notify the authorities whenever they change address. The Ministry’s office in Sharm el-Sheikh moved from temporary quarters to a permanent location about three weeks ago, it was disclosed. The Health Ministry is about to open a civilian dispensary in the Sinai town. Disclosure of the latest developments followed yesterday’s announcement by Housing Minister Zev Sharef that civilian housing at Sharm el-Sheikh was in an “advanced stage” of planning.
