Israel’s interior minister recommended that people who convert to Judaism in Israel no longer be granted automatic citizenship. Instead, Avraham Poraz of the secularist Shinui Party recommended, local converts could seek citizenship through means other than the Law of Return — such as the Law of Entry, family reunification, humanitarian concerns, identification with the Zionist cause, or based on their potential contribution to Israeli society as scientists, artists, actors or athletes.
