Italy’s prime minister urged Yasser Arafat to step down as Palestinian leader. At the G-8 summit of industrialized nations last week in Canada, Silvio Berlusconi said the international community was ready to help Palestinians as long as they set up a transparent democracy, but said many people think Arafat should “make a generous gesture and move aside.”
